Counseling/Psychotherapy/Coaching for Gay Men
While I work with all kinds of people in my practice, my specialty and deepest expertise is working with gay men. This has been the focus of my clinical work, research, writing, speaking, and advocacy since I started my practice in 1992.
In addition to my professional experience specializing in “gay-affirmative” psychotherapy, I am also a gay man myself, “24/7″, and sometimes I help my clients with my perspective not only as an expert on gay men’s mental health, but also drawing on my personal experiences and those of my friends and colleagues, who might have faced similar challenges as yours in the past, and conquered them.
Unlike some well-meaning and progressive-thinking straight therapists who claim to be able to work with gay men and lesbians, they lack what I call that “24/7 factor” that gives a depth of experience, “seasoning” and perspective to my work with gay men.
I also work with straight people, too, with certainly some expertise because I was raised by straight parents, in a largely heterosexual society, and with heterosexual examples in much of my training and experience, and with many heterosexual teachers, supervisors, and colleagues. Gay therapists, one could argue, can work more effectively with straight people than perhaps the other way around.
It is that kind of expertise, experience, knowledge base, and perspective that makes me a specialist in working with gay men.
